The word "great" is an understatement when describing what's it like to be God's child. Since God is a good, good Father who can never be compared to anybody, we can safely say that there's nothing like being His child. As mentioned earlier, "great" is an understatement.
Perhaps you've opened this article because you wanted to know what's it really like to be a child of God. I hope this article helps you discover the beautiful reality of being in a relationship with God as His adopted children.
Here are three things to know about what's it like to be God's children.
1) God rejoices in the fact that we are His
In Luke 15:20-24 we read how the father of the prodigal son responded when his lost child went back home.
Dirty and unkempt, and having ran away from home after disrespecting his dad (see Luke 15:11-12), the prodigal son went home ashamed of himself. He was so ashamed of himself, he told his father that he's "no longer worthy to be called [his father's] son." The father, however, quickly dismissed his son's shame and did the unexpected:
"...his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him... the father said to his servants, 'Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' And they began to be merry." (see Luke 15:20, 22-24)
God just rejoices at the fact that we can be His children in Christ. The fact that we turned away from our sin and turned towards Him made Him happy.
Don't you just love it when your very own God rejoices because of you?
2) We're assured that all things work for our good
Let me set things straight before continuing: all things will work for our good, if we meet one condition. So many people think that everything's going to turn out fine because God loves them, ignoring the very condition that God had set for such things to happen: that we love Him.
Romans 8:28-29 tells us that God makes all things work for the good to those who love Him. He causes all things to work in making us conform to the image of Christ, His one and only begotten Son.
He uses everything we go through - good and bad - to mold us into the character and likeness of Christ. He changes us continually, as we continue loving Him.
3) His love for us will never be taken away
There are so many orphans in the world today, simply because their parents left them. Irresponsible people leaving their kids behind, abandoning them and making them into love-deprived orphans burdened with rejection. This is very tragic.
God, as our Father, is able to heal our wounded hearts. If we were orphaned or abandoned by our parents, He is willing and able to heal us and make us whole. Psalm 27:10 tells us,
"When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take care of me."
God will never abandon us (see Hebrews 13:5). His love will never be taken away from us (see Romans 8:31-39). That's how it is for His children. His love for them will never fade away.
