Why Being Alone Sometimes Can Be Healthy: 3 Things People Can Enjoy Doing By Themselves

Some people are terrified of being alone, but not this busy wife and mother who thinks that time spent alone can be quite glorious.

Wellness coach and stay-at-home entrepreneur Jen Moser said she is so used to caring for her family members that when they decided to take a weekend trip and leave her alone in the house, it was quite a treat.

She binge-watched a TV series at home and enjoyed some take-outs. She even saw a performance of Mozart's Requiem Mass Choral church music by herself. Moser said some people made snarky comments about her being alone, but she didn't mind.

"Part of the self-care we need is finding the time to be alone. We spend so much of our time at work, tending to our families. Then when we are all tapped out from the craziness from the day, our spouses and partners want a bit of our time, too. Sometimes it becomes too much, and we need a break," she wrote for The Huffington Post.

"Being alone with your thoughts along with an opportunity to do something for yourself is a gift. Your soul craves that time for you to experience something that will fill you up so that you can give of yourself more freely and fully," she added.

Moser then suggested three things people ought to consider doing by themselves. The first thing is to download a piece of music they've always wanted to hear in concert. "Find a place where you can listen to it by yourself, and just allow yourself to feel it. What emotions does it stir within you? What does the music make you long for?" she said.

The second suggestion is to try a fun, new class. It could be related to sports, cooking, or crafts. Moser said it does not matter, just as long as people enjoy doing it. "Look around and take a class that opens a door to a new dimension of you," she recommended.

Lastly, Moser suggested that people commune alone with nature, and leave all of their gadgets at home. By doing so, they give themselves the opportunity to hear their own thoughts.

"It is okay to be alone sometimes. We crave that time so that we can be of better service to those who rely on us. The next time you have 30 minutes, a day or even a weekend to yourself, plan to carve some of that time out so you can do something for you. Your soul will thank you," she said.
