Wake up sleepy head! How your faith can help you get out of the bed in the morning

Getting out of the bed every morning can be one of the biggest challenges that a person can face, especially if life seems to be routine. Here are a few things that you can do to help you get up in the morning.

1) Expect God to do great things in your life today

Of course, you won't see a miracle in real life if you're just sleeping. The Bible tells us that God's mercies are new every morning (see Lamentations 3:22-23). This should be enough to motivate you to ask God for His goodness in the morning on a daily basis, and to motivate you to wait in eager expectation for His response.

Who knows, today might be the day when your prayers get answered.

2) Make the most of your time

Moses, the great man of God in early times, wrote a Psalm wherein he asked the Lord, "[t]each us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom" (Ps. 90:12).

We don't know how many days we'll have, so it's best to live to the fullest while we still can. There are only 24 hours in each day, and we usually spend about 8 hours to sleep. Having merely 16 hours to do all of our activities just isn't enough.

So what do we do? Paul told the Ephesian believers that they should be "making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil" (Eph. 5:16). We should use every minute of our life trying to enrich ourselves in the Lord, and not merely lie down in our beds!

Get up early and read your Bible. If it helps you, read a devotional. Commit to finish one good book every month so that you can learn more and continually enrich yourself.

3) Find a purpose

"Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint" (Prov. 29:18). Without a reason, purpose, a clear idea of who God wants us to be or what God wants us to do, it is very likely that we will "cast off restraint" and do whatever we would like to do.

The bed looks and feels very comfortable without a reason to get up, doesn't it?

It would be best to find something worth doing. Volunteer to help in building homes for the homeless. Offer to help your spouse in doing whatever needs to be done at home in the mornings. Sign up for that morning prayer group and commit to it. Be part of the fellowship that meets for coffee and sharing every Thursday morning. Go out for a jog while praying for your community or looking for somebody to help. The possibilities are endless!
