The Simple Secrets to Maintaining Better Relationships

It's important to get along well with people at home, at the office, and everywhere else. While some relationships are easier to forge and maintain, the same can also be achieved even with difficult people if people follow these simple secrets.

Dr. Michelle Rozen, Teamwork and Collaboration Expert, shared with The Huffington Post that building good relationships can be attained if people refresh their mindsets. If people know how to accept and respect their differences, they will find it quite easy to become friends, she said.

"Our notion that the way we see things is the 'right' way, is of course completely in our mind and we have to accept the fact that in order to have good relationships with pretty much anyone in our lives, we cannot limit ourselves to having good relationships with those who agree with us," she said.

In the same vein, a judgmental heart hinders people from enjoying good relationships. A person who judges is considered as an attacker. In dealing with this person, people immediately build up walls to protect themselves from criticism. "The general reaction is usually to stay away from them, physically and emotionally," said Rozen.

Those who know how to listen courageously and without judgment are on the right path to forging better relationships, she said. It isn't easy receiving criticism, but taken correctly, it can be constructive for one's overall growth. "Yes, you may not be as perfect as you like to think, and it takes a lot of courage to accept and listen to that, too," said Rozen. "Once you are able to do that, though, there is true opportunity for change and growth. Guaranteed."

Another mistake people should avoid is assigning blame. Blaming takes people nowhere, and it only sows resentment and hostility. So instead of blaming, people should try to talk about the mistake and learn how to get past it.
