Upcoming platform video game "Psychonauts 2" will not be released in 2018 as originally promised.

According to the recent update posted by game developer Double Fine Productions, they have reached the point where they know when the production timetable for "Psychonauts 2" is going to be finished, and it isn't the year 2018. Although they haven't provided an exact date, fans of the game should expect a release window by 2019 at the latest.

"We love the game we're making and we want to make sure that Psychonauts 2 is something you'll love too — a game that carries on the legacy of Psychonauts in a meaningful and special way," read the update. "We're making great progress, but we want to make sure the game has the time it needs to shine."

"We're sorry that you'll have to wait a little longer than we first estimated, but we're also hopeful that you'll understand it will mean being able to deliver a better game. We're really excited about the things we're making, and we can't wait to share them with you!"

"Psychonauts 2" was first announced back in the 2015 Game Awards, using Fig as a crowdfunding platform in order to partly fund the development of the game. By the beginning of 2016, the campaigned has raised more than $3 Million.

Aside from the bad news, the rest of the update introduced the Aquato family, who is the family of the game's main protagonist Raz. The Aquato family was already mentioned in the original "Psychonauts"—albeit just in memory vaults. In the sequel, Raz's family will be explored much further.

On other news, those who backed "Psychonauts 2" during the crowdfunding period will be receiving their rewards soon. The goodies are already in production, and it's reported that Double Fine wouldn't wait for the game's actual release before the backers receive their rewards. Some of the goodies included in the rewards are T-shirts, posters, a Raz mini-figure, and a black velvet painting.

"Psychonauts 2" will follow the events after "Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin." Tim Schafer, director of the Psychonauts series, also said that Raz will come to understand the term "girlfriend" in the coming game sequel.
