Pakistani minorities protest killing of Christians

Hundreds of Pakistani Christians have protested against the murder of Christians in Karachi.

The protest outside the Sargodha Press Club was led by Wagas Chohan, of the Pakistan Minority Movement.

In a statement he said that Pakistan was not just for Muslims but for all people, including minority groups like Christians and Hindus.

He said that Christians should not be considered as immigrants but as Pakistanis and equal citizens. Chohan called upon the government to do more to protect minorities from violent acts.

Earlier this week it was reported that two Christians were executed in the Taiser Town area of Karachi by Taliban militants after they protested against threatening messages that had been daubed on church walls byTaliban militants. Chohan demanded that the government set up an enquiry to investigate the killings.

Pakistan is becoming an area of increasing concern as Taliban militants continue to gain influence and ground. Earlier this year the Taliban succeeded in gaining control of the Swat Valley area and have implemented their own harsh version of Sharia law.

Since then girls' schools have been bombed and in one well publicised event a young girl was repeatedly flogged for allegedly being involved in illicit relations with a man.
