
For the last few years, Microsoft has been lagging behind Sony when it comes to consoles sales and video game exclusives. However, now that the Xbox One X, which is apparently the most powerful video game console ever made, hit stores this week, Microsoft revealed their plans to shift their entire perspective on the gaming business. This time, they plan to be on top.
According to Xbox chief Phil Spencer, they are now going to treat the whole Xbox business as a whole rather than just treating it as a sideline. In the next few years, the Washington-based company will be focusing on creating more exclusive content and increasing investment to create more video games.
"We need to grow, and I look forward to doing that," Spencer said in an interview with Bloomberg. "Our ability to go create content has to be one of our strengths. We haven't always invested at the same level. We've gone through ups and downs in the investment."
For years, critics have been vicious towards the Xbox for being the underdog when it comes to signature content. Only four Xbox One exclusives are included on the Metacritic list of the console's top 50 games, and overall sales have not been that promising either. Spencer said they will focus on addressing this problem in the next few years, which may entail expanding eSports, Xbox Live features, and streaming games to do so.
Still, even though Microsoft thinks it is inevitable that hardware content will die off in the next few years, they are still good for quite some time. In the future, the company may debut a kind of streaming device that does not necessarily require a console to play content, but then again, the possibilities are endless.
"This means fundamentally rethinking how we measure progress in gaming," said Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella.
