Looking for a spouse: The characteristics of a Godly wife

Single men who are praying for a wife should know that God has given details about the ideal wife in the Bible. God is greatly concerned about each man marrying the right woman, and has given wise counsel in His Word so that each man will be able to choose wisely and avoid piercing themselves with grief.

We all know that it was God who made Eve specifically for Adam. The Bible gives no detailed description about Eve's height, skin and hair color, or even facial features. It simply means that these outward characteristics aren't as important as how suitable the man and the woman are to each other in helping each other achieve God's best for their lives! This doesn't mean young men should look for "compatibility" either – because "complementing" is the word here.

Are you a single man praying for help in knowing what characteristics you should look for in a wife? Or are you a young woman hoping to get some counsel in what characteristics you should develop as a Godly woman? Here are some characteristics of a Godly wife according to the Bible.

1) She fears the Lord

"Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised." (Proverbs 31:30)

Good looks and a charming personality often attract men, but the fear of the Lord should be the most important characteristic a man will look for. While the physical attributes fade with age, a heart that continuously fears the Lord will grow to be more beautiful – inside and out – as the years go by.

2) She speaks wisely, not foolishly

"She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue." (Prov. 31:26)

You'll have conversations and meaningful exchanges with your wife for the rest of your life, so pray for a woman who speaks wisely always. Choose to marry a woman who refuses to engage in slanderous gossip.

3) She is compassionate

"She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy." (Prov. 31:20)

In a world where every person wants their needs met before anyone else's, a woman who is genuinely compassionate without seeking anything in return is a precious find. Pray to the Lord for a partner who will love those whom Jesus loved.

4) She is not lazy

"She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness." (Prov. 31:27; see also Prov. 31:13-19)

An industrious woman who does not hesitate to put her hands to work is a great partner in your work for the Lord.

5) She is excellent

"Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all."" (Prov. 31:28-29)

Godly wives surpass other women in many things, because she does her work for the Lord.

Closing thoughts

Remember that we are warned against yoking ourselves with unbelievers (see 2 Corinthians 6:14). While that is true, it's not enough for you to desire a "Christian" woman. Keep in mind that being "Godly" is different from being a "Christian."
