iPad Mini 2 launches TODAY on Apple store and Best Buy; starting at $399

Apple's iPad Mini 2 is now for sale on the retailer's website and on Best Buy.

After the unveiling of the second-generation iPad Mini last month, Apple quietly launched the sales of the new tablet this morning.

The 7.9inch retina display tablet is now available on the Apple store

With 3.1 million pixels, the iPad Mini 2 has a 2048x1536p resolution, which is four times the resolution to that of the first iPad Mini launched last year.

The slate packs a powerful A7 chip and M7 motion coprocessor with a 10-hour battery life. It also has Wi-fi that is twice as fast and supports LTE.

With the purchase of the new iPad Mini 2, consumers will be able to get free apps such as iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, Pages, Numberes and Keynote.

The tablets, available in Space Gray and Silver, are available starting at $399 for a 16GB Wi-fi variant.

The tablet is also available with 64GB and 128 GB storage, with the latter costing up to $699.

The 16GB and 32GB variants will be shipping between one to three days while the larger 64GB and 128GB variants will take between five to ten days to ship.

Apple unveiled the iPad Mini 2 along with the fifth-generation iPad Air at a keynote event in October.

The iPad Air weights only 1 pound and is just 7.4mm thin.

Specs include 9.7-inch Retina display with over 3.1 million pixels, A7 chip - a powerful and power-efficient A7 chip with 64-bit architecture and improved Facetime cameras. It is priced at $499 for the basic 16GB Wi-Fi model. The cellular model starts at $629 for the 16GB model and goes up to $929 for the 128 GB model.

Both new iPads run on iOS 7.
