How God proves to be our refuge in times of trouble

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.

Psalm 46:1-3

When you hear the phrase, "God is my refuge," what automatically comes to mind? Prior to ascending to heaven, Jesus gave us a promise that He would be with us to the very end of the age. God is present, we know, but do we see Him as a present refuge or simply as a present spectator?

It can often feel that God is indeed there during times of trouble, but only to watch us and see whether we will have enough faith in Him or whether we will sin against Him or not. We often see God like a spiritual referee, ready to blow the whistle when we do something wrong, but seldom do we see Him as a coach or team captain who carries the burden with and even for us when it feels like we're on the losing end.

A refuge is a safe dwelling that people in trouble or in danger can confide in. It is a long pause of rest and assurance during a storm, siege or attack. When the troubles of this world come for us, we can trust that God will be our refuge, an ever-present help in times of trouble. God doesn't choose the times that He will appear to help us. He is always there for us. That's what the Bible says and that's how God has been from the very beginning.

Proverbs 18:10 tells us, "The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe." Often we worry whether God can actually sustain or protect us. I can be guilty of this at various times. I often forget just how many times God has already proven Himself to be faithful by providing for me, sustaining me, restoring me and reconciling me back to Him.

All of this is made possible to us through the power of the cross. Through Jesus, we gain these promises of protection and guidance. When we face a storm, we can know that Jesus is with us on the boat. Sure, often it can seem like He's sleeping, but we can be assured that the moment He wakes up, He can calm the raging seas with a few words.

I'm not sure what you're going through today -- financial lack, job instability, sickness or disease -- but whatever it is, know that in Jesus there is refuge and there is rest. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
