Despite actor Michael Kelly's pronouncement that his character Doug Stamper will not be responsible for killing Kevin Spacey's Frank Underwood character in the upcoming season of Netflix's "House of Cards," rumors still persist that the President will be facing his demise in the hit show's fifth season.

According to a report by Movie News Guide, it is rumored that the Underwoods — who have devised a team-up to ensure that the power remains within the family — will face a challenge in the alliance when Claire (Robin Wright) herself hatches a plan to do away with Frank in a bid to become president.

It can be recalled in the previous season that Frank ran for president with his wife as VP as an insurance plan. Should he be ousted, Claire can still keep her post at the Oval Office.

However, it seems that betrayal will not be coming from opposing camps. It could originate from within their own group. Rumors say that Claire will connive with Doug to kill Frank.

"Those two men trust each other to the ends of the Earth. They're the only two people that each of them could count on. You've never seen Doug turn on Frank. We've never seen Frank turn on Doug. And they trust each other to the ends of the Earth so that's where Doug belongs. That's where he is. That's where he thrives in life," Kelly said to CNN in an earlier interview.

However, Michael's co-star Mahershala Ali — who plays Remy Danton in the series — does not share his confidence and said that if producers do choose to off Frank in the future, they could most likely select someone close to him to do the deed.

"Like maybe at some point because he's the one closest to him, my guess would be [Doug] Stamper," Ali said to The Wrap.

"House of Cards" returns to Netflix in 2017.
