Gaukroger becomes Patron of Viva

Christian children's charity Viva has appointed the Director of Clarion Trust International and former President of the Baptist Union, Stephen Gaukroger, as its new Patron.

Gaukroger is a prolific author and also Chairman of the Spring Harvest Charitable Trust.

Viva works with partners around the world to care for more than one million vulnerable children, including those orphaned by Aids and caught up in child labour or the commercial sex trade.

Part of Gaukroger's remit will be to champion their rights.

God’s view on social action is clear,” he said. “He commands His Church to feed the hungry, and to care for the weak and the oppressed. We need to do that, do it well, and do it together.

"I am committed to seeing the Church unite to bring about real
and significant change in our world, and Viva have their finger right on the pulse of that call to quality and unity in the efforts for children at risk.”

Viva runs local projects and provides training to support children in more than 40 countries.

The charity's founder and Chief Executive Patrick McDonald welcomed the new relationship with Mr Gaukroger.

“We’re delighted to have such a gifted and influential advocate speaking up for children at risk.

"The work for these vulnerable children needs a balance of
practicality and compassion.

"It must be focussed, strategic, and effective, but also passionately committed to seeing children’s lives changed.

"Stephen’s knowledge and expertise, and his desire for justice and salvation, will be of inestimable value as together we pursue that goal.”
