Obsidian, makers of the acclaimed role-playing game (RPG) "Fallout: New Vegas," recently announced that they will not be including any form of microtransaction in their upcoming RPG. This was despite the fact that indie publishers from Take Two Interactive are involved in the game.
Take Two Interactive once surprised gamers when they said that they want "recurrent consumer spending opportunities" in all their future games. Essentially, they were talking about wanting to put microtransactions in all future games they publish.
However, considering Obsidian's recent announcement, this demand for microtransactions may not apply to the upcoming RPG.
Publishing for Obsidian's upcoming work will be handled by an independent arm of Take Two Interactive called Private Division.
The developers thanked Private Division for giving them creative freedom over the upcoming game. "Private Division has been incredibly supportive of our vision, our creative freedom, and the process by which we work to make RPGs," Obsidian said.
They added that Private Division has not attempted to push the developers into putting something they do not want in the game— be it microtransaction schemes or other gameplay elements.
This made them say that Private Division are "fantastic partners" whom Obsidian were "extremely excited" to work with, all through the game's release.
Meanwhile, as for the game itself, Obsidian was stingy about the details. They said that they wish they could tell fans about the game right now. However, they chose to hold off "until the time is right."
In any case, the developers are pretty firm on their stand about this payment scheme that is recently gaining much media attention since Electronic Arts' "Star Wars: Battlefront II" fiasco.
"No microtransactions, of any kind, in our game," Obsidian said. No loot boxes, no crates, no cosmetic unlocks gained with real cash, presumably.
Obsidian has been in the video game industry since 2003. They are the makers of the aforementioned successor to the Fallout franchise, as well as RPGs "Tyranny" and "Pillars of Eternity."
