"Destiny" fans will be disappointed to know that the sequel to the hit online-only shooter game will not be released this 2016.

According to a report by Kotaku, some people close to people in Bungie have confirmed that 2016 will not be the year for a "Destiny 2" release. There is also no further news as to when gamers can expect the second instalment of the game to come out for players.

The "Destiny: The Taken King" expansion pack was Bungie's last update to the online-based game, and while that was released just last September fans are now clamouring for something new in the game play. Bungie has remained silent as per what will be coming next for the video game as no clear roadmap has been released or announced by either Bungie or Activision.

In a leaked copy of a contract signed by parties from Bungie and Activision, it was disclosed that the two companies would be working on putting out four versions of the "Destiny" game pack, and that each version would be released every other year. The first part of "Destiny" franchise-to-be was released last September 2014, meaning September 2016 should have been the release date for part two of the game.

Instead, the company will be focusing on other additional content to be released for the first part of the video game. "The way we're going is: you can expect new content from the live team in Destiny although we're not really telegraphing that," Senior designer Derek Carroll said in an interview with Euro Gamer. "Certainly, players can expect new events and new content throughout the next year. We're taking it one step at a time."

"Destiny" is a first person shooter game for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One gaming consoles. The game is the first franchise by Bungie after the success that was "Halo," and also the first game that they are doing together with Activision.

Set in a mythic science fiction realm, the game gives players the role of Guardians who's task is to defend what's left of Earth from a swarm of alien invasions.
