Dr. Daniel Charles' (Oliver Platt) fate has been up in the air ever since "Chicago Med" wrapped its second season in May. But the answer to that shocking cliffhanger has just been revealed via the official season 3 description.

In the shocking finale, the psychiatrist was shot by one of his patients outside the hospital. The last things fans saw was Charles falling to the floor as medics ran to his side. Fortunately, Platt's character seems to be too loved to be written off just yet.

In releasing the official description for "Chicago Med" season 3, NBC inadvertently revealed that Dr. Charles would survive the gunshot ahead of the show's return. The official logline, per TV Fanatic, said, "Dr. Daniel Charles recovers from both the physical and psychological injuries from being shot, but still remains the Sherlock Holmes of psychiatry."

This means Dr. Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo) can continue working as a resident in psychiatry under Dr. Charles although there will reportedly be "new reservations in the wake of her mentor's assault." Viewers will have to wait for the season to air before knowing these reservations, however. Regardless, this news brings relief to those who were worried that the head of psychiatry might no longer return next season.

Charles has been a fan-favorite since the beginning of the series. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he is usually seen helping other doctors deal with difficult patients or the psychological nuances of medicine. His daughter, Dr. Robin Charles (Mekia Cox) who also works in Chicago Med as an epidemiologist, was facing a mental health problem previously. Whether or not she recovers is another thing to tune in for when the show returns.

"Chicago Med" season 3 is confirmed to return to its Tuesday schedule after suffering in the ratings when it was moved to Thursday last season. The upcoming installment will premiere on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 10 p.m. EDT on NBC.
