Nothing can be more heartbreaking than the death of a beloved pet, but owners of a cat hit by a car in Tampa, Florida were in for a surprise when their cat re-appeared in their neighborhood alive.

According to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, the owners of a male cat named Bart buried him after they thought that a car crash had killed him. When the owner found Bart on the side of the road, the cat was lifeless and appeared dead, so they made the decision to bury him.

The Humane Society said that Bart was merely unconscious and, after regaining his strength, he clawed his way out of his grave and found his way back to his home. Five days after he was buried, the Society said, his owners' neighbours found him wandering in their backyard.

Unfortunately, Bart was dehydrated and needed immediate medical attention. Because they could not afford to pay for his medical fees, they took Bart to the Society's Animal Health Center. There, it was found out that Bart had a broken jaw, a ruined eye and open wounds in the face. Bart also required surgery to fix his injuries.

Bart eventually underwent repairs on his jaw and the removal of his injured eye on Tuesday, and has been referred to by the Society as the "Miracle Cat."

Cats coming back to life after being buried had been reported many times in the media in the past. In 2011, the Daily Mail reported the case of a male ginger cat named Alfie, who was also hit by a car in Minrow, Great Manchester in the United Kingdom. His owner, who had thought that Alfie was killed in the crash, also buried the cat.

However, the Daily Mail reported, the ginger tom proved to be alive as he resurfaced eight months later and returned to his old home.
