Things may be about to get more interesting in Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Amidst the renewal controversy of the show, Marvel and ABC released the first official poster of the fifth season on Wednesday, confirming that Phil Coulson (Clarke Gregg) and the team are headed into outer space.

Uploaded on the show's official Twitter account, the poster features the logo of Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division (SHIELD) on the outside of a spaceship. Check out the tweet below:

"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D" season 4 finale already hinted the cosmic direction of the new season when Coulson woke up to what appears to be a space prison after being picked up by an unknown, high tech military organization. Just before the credits rolled, he was heard saying it's time for him to go to work.

It remains to be seen what exactly happened and who those people who took the SHIELD team are. However, a popular theory claims it could be another Marvel organization.

Called the Sentient World Observation and Response Department (SWORD), Comic Book reports the organization is tasked to protect the Earth from threats anywhere in the galaxy. Basically, it's the cosmic version of SHIELD.

Fans will have to wait for the new episodes to know why they were taken, but it is likely that the mysterious agents were sent to bring Coulson and the team into the fold. Even though there are issues on the screen rights of the organization as it debuted in an "X-Men" comic, it kind of makes sense for Marvel to introduce SWORD.

"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D" will be deep into season 5 by the time "Infinity War" premieres in May 2018. In the film, Thanos is invading the Earth alongside his army. This would be a perfect time for a cosmic defense force. Plus, the series' 100th episode will air this season. It'd be nice for Marvel to tie the events of "Agents of SHIELD" to the third "Avengers" installment to celebrate the occasion.

Then again, the aforementioned is merely a theory. SWORD may also not be introduced in the show, so fans should take this with a grain of salt.

Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D" season 5 will premiere on ABC this winter.
