Abortions in New York decrease 21% since 2008 as more women opt not to undergo procedure

Abortions in New York dropped by 21 percent from 2008 to 2014 since the procedure was legalised in the state in 1970.

Statistics released by the New York Department of Health showed that in 2014, abortions totalled 93,299, lower by 1,027 compared to 94,326 in 2013.

Monroe County posted the biggest drop with 5 percent reduction in abortions in just one year. It is the only county with a consecutive seven-year abortion reduction, falling by 42 percent.

"It is our estimation that NY is the abortion bellwether for the U.S. So this is good news for everyone," said Jim Harden, president and CEO of Compassionate Care Pregnancy Services.

Those in the age range of 20-14 had the highest number of abortions in New York in 2014 with 28,470 followed by 25-29 with 25,025. Teens aged 18-19 had 6,762 abortions while those 15-17 had 3,325.

By gestation, women who were pregnant nine weeks or less had the most abortions with 56,129 followed by 9-10 weeks with 12,858. Abortions performed for at least 20 weeks of pregnancy totalled 2,106.

By procedure, suction and curettage topped the list with 64,494 followed by medical 19,795 and dilation and evacuation (D & E) with 8,482.

Harden said the seven-year New York state and city reductions represent the profit margin of the abortion business.

"In their fight to maintain their (abortion) monopoly...we should start to see increased legislative pressure and PR attacks," he said.

He said pro-abortion advocates claim that decrease in abortions happen because of increased access to contraception and legal restrictions on abortion.

"Yet these reasons do not account for the phenomena in NY. Not only is NY one of the most legislatively permissive states..., contraceptive use has played no measurable role either," he said, explaining that if abortion rates were decreasing because women were using contraception more effectively then the number of pregnancies in New York would also be decreasing.

However, pregnancy rates remained unchanged, meaning women opt not to have abortion.
