5 Means By Which the Spirit Helps Us in Our Weakness

"Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words." — Romans 8:26

Before Jesus was brought in to be executed, He made a promise to His disciples that He would bring a "Helper" who would empower them in ways they never knew before. That Helper was the Holy Spirit. The word "helper" is the word "parakletos," which translates to advocate or champion.

That's what the Holy Spirit does in our behalf—He champions our God-given cause and works in us so that even in our weakness we are enabled to work for and in God. When we aren't capable, the Holy Spirit becomes our capability.

Here are five means by which the Holy Spirit works even in our weakness.

1. Building of Our Character

The Spirit brings into our life His fruit, which the Bible tells us builds a character that does not only please God but gives us an immense advantage as well. Galatians 5:22-23 promises, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."

2. Impartation of Gifts

God brings upon each of us certain gifts that bring purpose by giving us a vital and irreplaceable function to play in the body of Christ. These gifts—whether tongues, or prophecy, or leadership, or service, or discernment, or any other gift as spoken in God's Word—come only from the Holy Spirit. Without the Spirit of God's presence, we are void of these gifts.

3. Power to Be a Witness

Our main purpose in life is to be a witness—to preach the gospel through our words and actions. We are called not just to talk about Jesus but to live a life that reflects His character. The only way that is possible is if the Holy Spirit moves through us. Acts 1:8 says, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

4. Working of Miracles

God makes miracles happen through us even today. When things become overwhelming and we are plagued by lack, sickness, trial or opposition, the Holy Spirit intervenes and brings reconciliation, healing and deliverance. He works today just as He always has.

5. Bringing of Comfort and Hope

If you've ever felt a lack of hope and encouragement before, you'll know how important it is to be encouraged. Acts 9:31 says, "So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied."

Bishop Martyn Snow said that many Christians are in favour of tighter border controls “not out of hatred but out of sincere concern for social cohesion, pressure on public services and the pace of cultural change in their communities”.
