Struggling with your Lenten fast? Never even given it a try? Maybe these personal accounts in which three Christians share their thoughts on fasting and its impact on their faith will inspire you.
Katharine, 27, Roman Catholic
This year, I have given up chocolate for Lent. I vary my Lenten sacrifice annually, pairing this with additional spiritual reading. I fast to be intentional in my relationship with Jesus. During a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, I was struck by a multitude of emotions when visiting the Garden of Gethsemane. I aim to be prayerful, holding this experience in my heart and mind. A Christian life and fasting isn't always easy, but I would recommend it. Fasting encourages me to look more readily towards God and allows the other pillars of Lent, almsgiving and prayer, to develop alongside.
Greg, 25, Pentecostal/Church of England
Food fasting is one of the most effective methods of fasting as you are truly denying your body's basic needs in order to strengthen your spirit and relationship with Jesus. I often give up chocolate or Facebook depending on which requires a fast the most at the time but this year it's nail biting! I have even bought the nail biting prevention stuff that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. However just having that control and strengthening your will power can go along way with teaching yourself to control your habits and think about how you can form more positive, developmental habits such as building a relationship with Jesus.
Sandra, 54, Roman Catholic
Fasting during Lent is something I do to feel closer and more connected to Jesus. I mainly give up food that's not good for me, that's unhealthy. This year I've given up rice, bread, fizzy drinks and tea. When I fast it makes me feel closer to Jesus, partly because it's something that Jesus did. It makes me feel good because it's a good way to cleanse the distractions from your life. I think you should do something good too, help others as well. At this time of the year my main focus is on the sacrifice that Jesus made for me and how I can also sacrifice things to help others. I would recommend it to other Christians because it gives you the space to reflect on what and who you really need to devote your time to.
